The #SmoothCanyonFire continues to burn in dead and down vegetation near the intersection of the Soap Creek and Soap Basin Trails located in the West Elk Wilderness, approximately 5 miles north northeast of Big Soap Park and 21 miles northwest of Gunnison, Colorado.
The fire has shown minimal growth and is primarily creeping and smoldering. It is 11 acres in size and continues to be monitored by aircraft. There are no structures threatened and no closures in effect.

At approximately 11:04 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, the Smooth Canyon Fire was reported in the West Elk Wilderness, approximately 5 miles north northeast of Big Soap Park and 21 miles northwest of Gunnison, Colorado.
The fire is approximately 1.5 acres and currently has low spread potential, with fire behavior primarily creeping and smoldering. The fire is in a remote area and is being monitored by aircraft.
Minimal smoke and haze may be seen in the area over the next few days. There are no structures threatened and no area closures are in effect at this time. Firefighter and public safety are the priorities for this incident.
