Sunday, May 29, 2022 – 9:00am
Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests Type 3 Incident Management Team
Cody Russell, Incident Commander
Current Situation:
The Simms Fire acreage is currently 313 acres with 100% containment. Crews working in the fire area experienced very high winds on Saturday. Despite the wind, no additional hot spots were located. Crews report the wind was a good test of the fire lines and are feeling confident about the condition of the fire area.
Initial rehabilitation work will continue throughout the weekend and into the beginning of next week. Suppression repair activities include re-seeding, rehabilitating dozer and handline, and fence repair. The initial goal is to re-seed approximately 15 acres of the burn area over the next three days. Fence line repair will continue into next week. An excavator continues to work on repairing dozer line to bring the landscape back to a more natural state.
Safety: Careful consideration for public and firefighter safety remains the top priority on this incident. Wildcat Canyon and T & M Roads remain closed to the public while fire operations continue. Firefighters request that the public avoid the fire affected area out of respect for community and firefighter safety.
Weather & Fuel Conditions: A cold front will move through this afternoon bringing the possibility of strong storms. It is unlikely that precipitation will develop over the burn area. Strong, southwest winds will continue. Wind gusts are expected to reach 35 mph. Temperatures will be in the upper 60’s today. Humidity will increase to 22-27%. The possibility of storms will continue into Monday but are expected to be north of the fire area.
Evacuations and Fire Restrictions: There are no evacuation orders in place. For more information contact https://ouraycountyco.gov/272/Emergency-Management.
