Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests
Type 3 Incident Management Team
Justin Reece, Incident Commander
Current Situation:
The Simms Fire acreage is currently 313 acres with 100% containment. Fire Crews report no change in conditions within the fire area despite the hot, dry weather conditions. Firefighters located some additional hot spots this morning but were able to cool them before the afternoon winds began. Due to the weather, crews will remain on scene longer than usual this evening to make sure the fire remains contained.
The Type 3 Incident Management Team remains in place and suppression repair work continues. Firefighters have been working on the south end of the fire doing repair work on privately owned land as well as public land. Crews will continue to cool hot spots, repair fence lines, and rehabilitate fire line into the weekend.
Safety: Careful consideration for public and firefighter safety remains the top priority on this incident. Wildcat Canyon and T & M Roads remain closed to the public while fire operations continue. Firefighters request that the public avoid the fire affected area out of respect for community and firefighter safety.
Weather & Fuel Conditions: A Red Flag Warning remains in place today. Strong southwesterly wind gusts between 35 to 40 mph are expected this afternoon. Temperatures will be in the 70’s today and humidity will range between 8-13%. A cold front will bring the possibility of isolated showers overnight but will be more likely on Sunday. The incoming cold front is expected to bring cloud cover and cooler temperatures for Sunday.
Evacuations and Fire Restrictions: There are no evacuation orders in place. For more information contact https://ouraycountyco.gov/272/Emergency-Management.
