The Sowbelly fire is currently 2,251 acres and experiencing minimal fire behavior. In today’s operations firefighters utilized indirect and direct tactics to try and keep fire North of the ZS road and limit fire spread into Escalante Canyon. They also scouted and identified potential holding features to the North while limiting impacts to the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness. Ground resources were supported by air attack again today and additional resources are continuing to arrive on the incident.

The Sowbelly Fire is currently burning in the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness Area in Delta and Mesa counties at approximately 2,192 acres. It is currently burning in pinyon-juniper fuels. Fire behavior was significant yesterday due to high winds and hot temperatures, with a highly visible smoke plume from Hwy 50 between Grand Junction and Olathe. Currently local resources and smoke jumpers are responding to the incident, but suppression has been a challenge due to difficulty accessing the fire based on terrain and location.
