FIRE PREVENTION ORDER FOR STAGE II FIRE RESTRICTIONS
WHEREAS, the Sheriff of San Miguel County, Colorado, has the power to ban open fires to a degree and in a manner they deem necessary to reduce the danger of wildfires within those portions of the unincorporated areas of San Miguel County where the danger of forest or grass fires is found to be high based on competent evidence; and
WHEREAS, the Sheriff of San Miguel County, Colorado, has determined that the current danger of forest or grass fires in all of unincorporated San Miguel County is high at this time, and fire restrictions are necessary and appropriate to reduce the danger of wildfires.
NOW, THEREFORE, it is resolved that as of June 26, 2026, 12:01 a.m., Stage II fire restrictions will be in place in all of unincorporated San Miguel County until further notice, prohibiting the following:
Stage II Fire Restrictions
• No Open Fires
– – No campfires, charcoal grills, wood-burning stoves, chimineas, tiki torches, or any open flames, even at private homes
— Gas grills or fire pits are allowed only if they have a shutoff valve, and only in areas cleared of flammable materials.
• No smoking except within an enclosed vehicle, building, or other approved area
• No operating chainsaws or other equipment powered by an internal combustion engine, unless equipped with a working spark arresting device
• No welding or torches unless in a cleared area at least 10 feet wide and a pressurized fire extinguisher must be on hand
• No off-road driving or parking: vehicles must stay on established roads, trails, or parking areas unless there is no vegetation within 10 feet of the parking area
• No explosives, fireworks, or other incendiary devices
The following acts are always prohibited on federally managed lands:
• The use of fireworks and other incendiary devices
• Leaving fires unattended or unextinguished
This Order supersedes the previous Order filed on June 18, 2026 and shall remain in effect from June 26, 2026 at 12:01 a.m. until rescinded.
