MONTROSE, Colo.- Due to extreme fire danger and ongoing wildfire activity across Colorado, Montrose County will move into Stage 2 Fire Restrictions beginning at ??12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2026??.
These restrictions apply to both the east and west ends of unincorporated Montrose County and are intended to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires during a period of heightened fire danger. The restrictions do not apply within the incorporated limits of the City of Montrose, the Town of Olathe, the Town of Naturita, or the Town of Nucla.
Recent days have brought multiple wildfires across Colorado. While some fires have been successfully contained, new fires continue to ignite, and conditions in Montrose County remain extremely dry. With no significant precipitation in the forecast, local officials say the risk of a large, destructive wildfire is exceptionally high.
Activities Prohibited Under Stage 2 Fire Restrictions:
- Any campfires, including charcoal or pellet grills
- Agricultural burns or any open burning
- Smoking in timber, brush, or grass-covered areas
- Fireworks or pyrotechnics of any kind, including exploding targets
- Cutting, welding, or grinding outdoors
- Operating or using any internal combustion engine such as chainsaws without a spark-arresting device
Activities Permitted:
- Propane or liquid-fueled camp stoves, lanterns, and heating devices equipped with an on/off switch
- Target shooting in a safe manner
