As of May 22, 2026, Hinsdale County Commissioners implemented Stage 1 fire restrictions in Upper Piedra area of the southern portion of Hinsdale County. These fire restrictions match the same actions put into place this morning in the San Juan National Forest in the Upper Piedra area. Fire restrictions do not include the Weminuche Wilderness portion of the forest. Attached is a map showing the area in the southern portion of Hinsdale County that is now under Stag 1 fire restrictions.
There are currently no fire restrictions in the northern area of Hinsdale County or in the Lake City area.
In Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, prohibited activities include any outdoor fires – including grills and barbecues — on public lands unless in a developed recreation site or campground. Outdoor fires on private property must be in a permanent fire pit. Private fireworks, explosives, smoking outdoors unless in a three-foot area cleared of all flammable materials and welding unless in a ten-foot cleared area are all prohibited in Stage 1 fire restrictions. Fires in permanent fire pits & grills on private property are permitted as well as camping stoves in recreation sites or campgrounds.
